POS hardware: receipt printer, barcode scanner, cash drawer

The register runs in your browser, so hardware connects without drivers. Use Chrome or Edge on a computer — they are the browsers that can talk to USB printers and scales. Hardware is set up under More > Hardware, which owners, staff admins and managers can open.

Receipt printer

Use a USB thermal receipt printer that supports ESC/POS (most 58 mm and 80 mm receipt printers do).

  1. Plug the printer into the computer.
  2. Go to More > Hardware and click Pair under Receipt printer.
  3. Choose the printer in the browser's window.
  4. Click Test print.

Once paired, the register prints a receipt after every sale, prints refund receipts and reprints, and prints kitchen tickets for restaurants. Pairing is saved in that browser on that computer.

Tip: if receipts stop printing after you reload the register, open More > Hardware once — the printer reconnects there.

Cash drawer

Plug the drawer's cable into the drawer port on the back of the receipt printer. The drawer opens by itself for cash sales, cash paid now on pay-later bills and cash refunds.

To open it without a sale, click Open drawer on More > Hardware. This needs an open shift and the Open cash drawer permission.

Barcode scanner

  • USB scanners that type like a keyboard work as soon as you plug them in. Use the test field on More > Hardware to check a scan.
  • No scanner? Click Camera scan to scan with the device's camera.

A scan adds the product whose SKU or barcode matches. Scanning works while a shift is open.

Card reader

The register supports Stripe Terminal card readers in countries where Stripe Terminal is available. Under Card reader, click Discover readers to connect one. See Taking payment on the POS: cash, card, UPI, split payments and receipts.

Customer display

Show the cart to the customer on a second screen:

  1. Go to More > Hardware > Customer display and click Open display.
  2. Drag the new window onto the screen that faces the customer.

It shows each item, the subtotal, discount, tax and total, and says Thank you after payment. It must be opened from the register's own browser.

Weighing scale

Scales are set up under More > Billing > Weighing scale. See Sell by weight with a weighing scale.

Other printers on the Hardware screen

The Hardware screen also lists a Bluetooth receipt printer, a label printer and network printers (CloudPRNT). At the moment these print test pages only — receipts and kitchen tickets print on the USB receipt printer.

Receipt branding

More > Receipt sets the logo, header, footer, return policy, custom note and tax breakdown for receipts you download and print from an order (Download Receipt). Thermal receipts print your store's name, address and phone.

Troubleshooting

  • Nothing prints — use Chrome or Edge, check the USB cable, and open More > Hardware to reconnect. Close other tabs or apps that may be using the printer.
  • The drawer doesn't open — check the cable is in the printer's drawer port and the printer is paired. The person signed in needs the Open cash drawer permission.
  • Scans go to the wrong place — make sure a shift is open and set the scanner to send Enter after each code (see its manual).
