Do I need a tax registration to sell on LaunchMyStore?
You can create a LaunchMyStore and start selling without registering for tax up front. Whether you eventually need a tax ID — GST in India, VAT in the EU/UK, GST/HST in Canada, or a state sales-tax permit in the US — depends on where you sell, what you sell, and how much revenue you make.
The short answer
LaunchMyStore does not require a tax ID to create an account, build your store, or accept your first orders. Your obligation to register comes from your local tax authority, not from LaunchMyStore.
When you typically need to register
India (GST): Required once your annual turnover exceeds the GST threshold (currently $20 lakh for services and $40 lakh for goods in most states; lower in special-category states). Inter-state sales generally require GST registration regardless of turnover.
European Union (VAT): Required if you are established in the EU and exceed the VAT threshold in your country, or if you cross the EU-wide €10,000 distance-selling threshold for sales to other EU countries.
United Kingdom (VAT): Required once your UK taxable turnover exceeds the VAT threshold (currently £90,000).
United States: Sales-tax permits are required per state where you have nexus (physical presence, employees, inventory, or economic nexus from revenue thresholds — usually $100,000 or 200 transactions per year).
Canada (GST/HST): Required once you exceed CAD $30,000 in revenue over four consecutive quarters.
Australia (GST): Required once your annual GST turnover exceeds AUD $75,000.
Thresholds change. Check your local tax authority's current rules, or consult an accountant.
Configuring tax in your store
Once you have a tax ID (or know you need to charge tax even without one), go to Settings > Taxes & duties to:
Set tax-inclusive or tax-exclusive pricing
Enable automatic tax for supported regions
Add manual tax overrides for specific products, categories, or shipping zones
Enter your tax registration numbers per country/region — these appear on invoices and tax reports
If you ship internationally
You may need to register in countries where you cross local thresholds. LaunchMyStore supports per-zone tax rules so you can collect the correct amount per buyer location. Consider an automated tax service (Avalara, TaxJar, Quaderno) from the App Store if your tax footprint is complex.
FAQ
Can I sell on LaunchMyStore without any tax ID?
You can sign up and start building. Whether you can lawfully sell without a tax ID depends on your country's rules and your revenue. For low-volume hobby selling, many regions allow informal sales; once you cross a threshold, you'll need to register.
Does LaunchMyStore file taxes on my behalf?
No. LaunchMyStore is the platform; you are the merchant of record. The store helps you calculate and collect tax, and it gives you reports, but filing and remitting are your responsibility (or your accountant's).
How do I show a tax-inclusive price?
Under Settings > Taxes & duties, toggle Show prices inclusive of tax. The storefront will then display the tax-inclusive price on product and cart pages.
What if I want to charge no tax at all?
Leave tax rules empty for the zones you do not collect in. The store will show prices as-is and not add tax at checkout. You are still responsible for any tax owed under local law.
Can I show different tax behavior for B2B vs B2C buyers?
Yes. Tag B2B customers, then use tax overrides or a checkout extension to apply reverse-charge or zero-rated tax to that segment. The App Store has B2B/wholesale apps that automate this.
