Remove test orders from your store
While you're setting up payments and themes, you'll usually place a few test orders. Those rows pollute your analytics and customer list, so it's good practice to clean them up before launch.
Cancel a test order
- Go to Orders in the admin.
- Open the test order.
- Click More actions > Cancel order.
- Choose a reason (e.g., "Other") and confirm. Inventory is restocked.
- If a real charge was captured (you used a live card by mistake), refund it from the same screen.
Delete the test order
Cancellation hides the order from fulfillment but it still appears in the list. To remove it from history:
- Open the cancelled order.
- Click More actions > Delete order.
- Confirm. The order is removed from the list and analytics.
Note: deletion is permanent. If you need an audit trail, leave the order cancelled instead of deleting it.
Bulk-delete test orders
- Filter the order list by tag (use a tag like test on every test order so they're easy to find), or by your own test email/customer.
- Select multiple rows with the checkboxes.
- Choose Bulk actions > Delete.
Test orders the right way
- Use a dedicated test customer with an email like
[email protected]so the orders are easy to filter and delete. - Tag each test order with
testat creation. - If your payment provider supports test mode (e.g., Stripe), keep it on until launch — test charges aren't real money and don't need refunding.
FAQ
Will deleting an order affect inventory?
Cancelling restocks inventory. Deleting an already-cancelled order doesn't change inventory again.
Will my analytics still show old test orders?
Deleted orders are removed from sales metrics. Cancelled orders are excluded from revenue but still appear in the order count — that's why we recommend deleting after launch.
Can I undo a delete?
No — deletion is permanent. Cancel first if you might need the record.
How do I get a real refund for a test order I placed on a live card?
Open the order, click Refund, and confirm. The amount goes back to the buyer's card through your payment provider, typically within 5-10 business days.
Is there a "test mode" for the whole store?
Not as a single switch, but you can keep your payment provider in test mode and only flip to live when you're ready. Until then, every checkout will use test cards.
